About

COE Akshaya

Our firm Chandra Oil Expellers (COE), is a Coconut Oil manufacturing unit in Kerala, India, established in 1956. Over the years, we have undergone various modernisation to increase efficiency, production capacity and quality. We owe our success over the years to our perseverance, commitment and resolution to be uncompromising in the quality of our product to keep our customer's trust. We take pride in providing the best quality product to our customers. Our sales facilities are located in Kerala and Odisha (for over 35 years). We also export to other countries as per demand. We manufacture roasted, double-filtered coconut oil with a golden yellow texture and sweet aroma. Our oil has a robust natural smell, flavour and taste, all-natural without additives. Our oil is promoted mainly for cooking but is perfectly viable as hair or massage oil. We are committed to providing our customers with safe and healthy pure coconut oil. Our top priority is ensuring the highest quality and customer satisfaction. To achieve this, we use only hand-selected sun-dried copra, which helps to maintain the quality of our oil. We also strictly enforce a no-additives policy, making our coconut oil free from chemicals and preservatives.

History

  • Chandra Oil expeller was established in 1956 by Sree A V Janardhanan. There were well over 100 coconut oil factories in Alappuzha, Kerala, during that time, only our unit survived the test of time. We owe our success to our perseverance and commitment to maintaining our product's quality and keeping our customers' trust.
  • In 1960, a 2nd larger factory was made in Alappuzha, making it our primary production and we replaced our rotary extraction machines with modern expellers so as to improve the efficiency
and production capacity of the units. In the year 1988 we started a sales depot in Orissa, India. In 1990, we introduced cookers into the extraction process to produce roasted coconut oil, thus enhancing the taste, smell and shelf life without additives or chemicals. This removes the moisture content in the copra even further, enriching the quality of the oil. We also installed driers to make the copra drying process easier and more efficient. In 1991, we launched our coconut oil in the market under the brand name C.O.E Akshaya in a sealed satchel package. We do the packaging in our own factory to ensure the quality of theproduct.
  • In 1998, Chandra Oil expeller started a new purchasing depot in Kerala to buy bulk quantities of the best quality Kerala copra as the copra market moved away from Alappuzha, making it challenging to obtain the necessary amount within the local market. One of the significant difficulties we face here is the danger of yearly floods during the rainy season. We mitigate the damage by being prepared early using pumps and barriers to stop the floods, such as moving the machinery to higher ground. The floods in 2018 especially devastated the whole of Kerala. We survived and endured these difficulties due to our loyal customers. We thank them for trusting us over the years and will do our utmost best to keep living up to their expectations. No matter the cost, we will not compromise on the quality of our product.
The story continues and we strive to keep the legacy of A V Janardhanan alive and flourishing.

Process

  • Copra is the dried white flesh of the coconuts. We buy copra from agents who collect them from farmers within Kerala.
  • We have a supply depot in Guruvayoor from where we buy copra in bulk.
  • Our experts hand-select only the best quality sun-dried copra based on their quality and dryness to ensure premium quality before sending them to our factory in Alappuzha.
  • Once the load arrives at our factory, we use an industrial dryer to blow hot air to dry them further to remove moisture from the copra for about 8 - 12 hours.
  • Then they are heated further using a boiler and cooker to roast them using steam to remove even further moisture. This process gives the golden yellow colour to the oil and enhances the taste and smell, bringing out the flavour and sweet aroma as well as increasing the shelf life without any additives.
  • The roasted copra is then cut into smaller pieces, where they are fed into multiple expellers to extract the oil. The oil is then filtered multiple times using filter presses to increase the clarity and remove unwanted residue. The final product is then tightly sealed to ensure the taste and smell lasts.
  • We get oil cakes as a byproduct of the crushed copra. We also produce coconut oil cake, which is a byproduct of oil extraction from copra. The oil cakes are used as cattle feed, manure for plants and manufacturer for other edible products.
